Mick Lawless of the Irish Road Club is the new president of the Irish Cycling Federation. He takes over from Pat McQuaid, who had completed his term in office. In the ballot at the a.g.m. in Malahide on Saturday Lawless won with 63 votes to 48 for the only other candidate Paddy O'Callaghan of Cromane in Kerry.
Paddy Doran, unopposed, was ratified to continue in charge of coaching. Tommy Campbell moved from being responsible for leisure affairs to take over as chairman of the development committee leaving the way clear for Liam Leahy of Midleton to head the leisure committee.
There was also a vote for the position in charge of mountain bike racing with Peter Purfield winning the vote from Denis Middleton of Mayo by 63 to 48. The other members of the ICF Board stay in for another year - Jack Watson as secretary, treasurer Peter Thornton, Ciaran McKenna as PRO, Sean O'Callaghan in charge of underage racing and Eamon Lawlor, absent on Saturday, was recently drafted in to fill the vacancy as chairman of the sporting committee.
