Langer hopes to play in next Ryder Cup

Golf Digest/Ryder Target: Bernhard Langer has revealed he intends to take part in the next Ryder Cup - as a player

Golf Digest/Ryder Target: Bernhard Langer has revealed he intends to take part in the next Ryder Cup - as a player. The German's successor as captain of the European team for 2006 will be announced on Wednesday on the eve of the Desert Classic in Dubai.

Langer, however, still has ambitions of his own.

"I would love to play another time," he said. "At the same time I realise it would be a small percentage to achieve that. I would then be 49 and we have a lot of great young players.

"It will be difficult to make the team outright but nevertheless I believe I can do it. I will give it my best shot. I have a very competitive nature - I love to play under pressure."

Ian Woosnam and Nick Faldo are favourites to become captain and Langer believes either man would do a good job.

"They are in the age bracket where they are still involved with the players but are not going to make it as players outright.

"I think both would like to do it as well. Both are very experienced. They have been in many Ryder Cups and know what is needed."

WEBB COMEBACK: The Australian Karrie Webb won her fifth ANZ Women's Masters title at Royal Pines Resort after a thrilling five under par 67 saw her finish one shot ahead of 19-year Japanese rising star Ai Miyazato on Australia's Gold Coast.

Webb won on 16-under par 272 despite starting the final day four shots behind the teenager.

The 30-year-old from Ayr in Northern Queensland began in form reminiscent of her days as world number one with a par at the opening hole, a birdie, an eagle after chipping in from 25-yards and another birdie to draw level after four holes.

Miyazato birdied the sixth to move one clear again, but a dropped shot at the eighth levelled the scores once more. Both birdied the par five ninth, but the key moment in the round was when Webb rifled a six-iron at the flag on the 13th and dispatched the resulting eight footer.

When Miyazato three-putted the par three 14th, Webb held a two-shot lead. Only a bogey at the final hole prevented Webb from posting the lowest round of the day, but it was clear to see the Australian number one was back at her best.

Sharing third place on 12-under par were Italian Veronica Zorzi, who had a 70, and Sweden's Maria Hjorth who had a 69. Nikki Campbell from Canberra closed out at 11-under par for sole fifth place, while Sweden's Linda Wessberg took sixth outright on 10-under par.

PLAY-OFF : Peter O'Malley beat fellow Australian Steven Bowditch in a play-off to win the New Zealand PGA in Christchurch on Sunday.

O'Malley, 39, birdied the fourth extra hole to capture the seventh professional title of his career after the pair had finished tied on 14-under-par 274.

Bowditch, who won last week's South Australian Open, started the day six shots behind joint overnight leader O'Malley but charged through the field with a course record-equalling nine-under 63 at the Clearwater Resort.

O'Malley carded a 69 but should have sealed victory on the last regulation hole when he missed a par putt from four feet.

Americans Jerry Smith and Johnson Wagner finished joint third on 11-under, one stroke clear of compatriots Troy Matteson and Brandt Snedeker and Australian Steven Jeffress.

Bowditch collected nine birdies in his round, including six in seven holes from the eighth. He missed an eagle putt on the par-five 14th.

He saved par with a long putt on the 15th and failed to take birdie chances on each of the final two holes.

Playing the 18th again to decide the winner, O'Malley and Bowditch halved the hole three times with successive par-fours before O'Malley sank a 25-foot birdie putt to clinch the title.

COURSE RECORD: Marc Cayeux became the first foreigner to capture the season-ending Sunshine Tour Championship in Johannesburg yesterday.

Cayeux scored a six-shot victory by shooting a course record 11-under-par 61.

He finished the tournament on 20-under-par for a total of 268. South Africa's Keith Horne finished second on 14-under-par.
