MONAGHAN UNITED continued their rich vein of form as they extended their unbeaten run to seven games with a 1-0 defeat of struggling St Francis at Gortakeegan yesterday. Lee King, scorer of their winning goal in last Tuesday's defeat of league leaders Drogheda United, again proved the match-winner with the only goal from a seventh-minute penalty.

Monaghan had much the better of a generally poor game but did create further chances late on, most notably when Dave McEnroe hit a post in the final minute. The result gives Monaghan a five-point cushion over the bottom two and looks like leaving St Francis to have to apply for re-election in their first season in the National League.

Two goals in the last four minutes salvaged a late point for Limerick and further dented Galway United's promotion hopes at Terryland Park on Saturday night.
