Former Tyrone and Ulster star Enda Kilpatrick may have re-launched the career of an old Derry favourite. Kilpatrick was manager of an Ulster Select which took on Derry in a challenge game on Sunday, and called up Enda Gormley to his attack.
Gormley, who came out of retirement earlier this season, responded with a sparkling performance, hitting eight points, including five from play, against his county colleagues. Now Kilpatrick believes the veteran forward has played himself right back into contention for a dramatic recall to the starting line-up for Sunday week's All-Ireland semi-final against Galway.
"Enda is probably in the twilight of his career, but he will have to be in the reckoning for a starting place," said the former Tyrone captain. "Most of the points he scored were from play, and he looked very strong, well able to take the knocks, because the Derry defence are fairly physical. They weren't standing back and he was strong enough to hold off a challenge and bide time for himself and knock the ball over the bar."
Kilpatrick is confident that Derry, All-Ireland champions in 1993, can reach another final when they take on the Connacht champions on August 23rd.
"I don't think there's any doubt that they can beat Galway. If they go out and play to their strengths, with the likes of Brolly up front taking his chances, they can go all the way to the final. And Anthony Tohill is a very important player who looks to be coming into top form."
Kilpatrick said the Derry midfielder's performance in Sunday's challenge game was his best of the season in what was a keenly contested game.
"Anthony Tohill was in awesome form. He's nearly impossible to stop once he gets going, and it was clear that was one of their main plays. It's not a bad time of the season to be coming good again.
"Then you have the likes of Dermot Heaney, also very strong and pushing hard for a place."
