This replay, at Dr Cullen Park, Carlow, on Saturday evening, lacked the drama and tension of the July 5th drawn encounter at Croke Park, with Wexford unable to reproduce their spirit and determination against defending champions Kilkenny. This was Kilkenny's ninth successive Leinster minor title and their 44th in all.
Wexford were a major disappointment for their large support in the attendance of 4,000. They did stay in touch for 20 minutes, at which stage the sides were tied at 0-4 each. But by halftime Kilkenny had crept to a 0-9 to 0-5 lead.
The second half saw the holders in complete charge, striking a succession of unanswered points. Wexford failed to score in the third quarter and their lone second-half score was a 46thminute pointed free by Leon O'Connell. A minute earlier, Kilkenny's outstanding forward Kevin Power provided a magnificent telling pass for forward colleague Joey Murray to shoot a superb goal. Garoid Cleere's magnificent 53rd-minute strike put the game well out of Wexford's reach.
