With five defeats in 11 competitive matches, Milan started their match determined to shake off hints of crisis.

But it took 40 minutes for the breakthrough, Baggio's inswinging free kick creating havoc in the area and allowing George Weah to volley home his sixth goal of the season.

Straight after the break, Weah combined neatly with Marco Simone to put Milan two up only for Brazilian Andre Cruz to find another hole in the champions defence with a 20 metre shot.

Salvatore Giunta sowed the seeds of Roma's second defeat in a week by curling a left foot shot past goalkeeper Giorgin Sterchele from the edge of the area on the half hour.

The visitors, still reeling from their 3-0 UEFA Cup loss to Karlsruhe, fought their way back into the game with Marco Delvecchio's 51st minute, equaliser only for Pierluigi Orlandini's 80th minute effort to give Verona their first win of the season and lift them off the bottom of the table.

With Bologna due to meet traditional rivals Fiorentina in next week's Italian Cup match, club president Giuseppe Gazzoni had billed yesterday's match at the Dall Ara as a dress rehearsel for the two club's traditionally hostile fans.

He was not impressed. Florentine supporters celebrated Gabriel Batistuta's spectacular, 30 metre opener in a 2-9 victory for the visitors by launching flares at Bologna fang.

When goalkeeper Luca Marchegiani was sent off after five minutes for handling. Lazio's poor season - five points in as many matches looked set to continue against Cagliari.
