GOLF DIGEST:EUROPEAN TOUR: Defending champion Thongchai Jaidee defied fatigue and the elements to card a superb five-under-par second round and share a one-shot clubhouse lead at the weather-affected Ballantine's Championship.
Thailand’s Thongchai moved to eight-under-par 136 alongside Argentina’s Tano Goya at a blustery Pinx Golf Club, where officials have decided to shorten the event by one round.
Nearly seven hours were lost to fog on Thursday and only half the field completed their second rounds yesterday, with many playing in excess of 30 holes in persistent winds of 15-20 miles per hour on Jeju island.
Asian number one Thongchai wrapped up a three-under-par first round before kick-starting his bid to defend his title in bright but testing afternoon conditions which affected tee shots by as much as 150 yards and forced as much as a four-club difference in shot selection.
“I played very well in both rounds today,” said the weary 40-year-old Thai, after playing 35 holes in 11 hours.
First-round leader Marcus Fraser sits a shot off the pace tied for third on seven under par alongside fellow Australian Brett Rumford, who posted a second-round 70.
Fraser, still has his second round to come today ahead of Sunday’s final round, while an imposing group including in-form duo Ernie Els and Anthony Kim and Ireland’s Gareth Maybin also have 18 holes in hand.
Of the Irish to complete their rounds, Peter Lawrie is best on 143 after a second round 74, Paul McGinley added a 75 for 147, while Damien McGrane is on 148 after a 77.
WOMEN'S NATIONS CUP:Swedish pair Anna Nordqvist and Sophie Gustafson claimed a two-shot lead after the second round of the Comunitat Valenciana European Nations Cup in Alicante yesterday. They hit 10 birdies on their way to a 62 to sit 15-under-par 129, ahead of Spain's Tania Elosegui and Emma Cabrera.
The Australian team of Karrie Webb and Karen Lunn were in a tie for third on 10-under-par 134 with Italians Veronica Zorzi and Giulia Sergas and Danes Iben Tinning and Lisa Holm Sorensen.
Rebecca Coakley and Hazel Kavanagh are well off the pace on 147 after a 75.
US TOUR:Brian Davis fired a six-under-par 66 in difficult conditions to move into a tie at the top early in round two of the 2010 Zurich Classic of New Orleans before play was suspended because of lightning.
Davis, on seven-under-par 137, shares the lead with Lee Jansen and Alex Cejka.
SCOTTISH AMATEUR: Defending champion Leona Maguire is two shots off the pace after the first round of the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur strokeplay championship at Troon Portland links.
Maguire shot a seven-under-par 69 with an eagle three at the ninth where she chipped in from 20 yards, and birdies at the first, fifth, sixth, 11th and 18th to trail first-round leaders Louise Kenney and Nikki Foster by two shots. Danielle McVeigh from Royal Co Down is a shot back on 70, while Lisa Maguire fired a one-under-par 74.
