GOLF DIGEST: AMATEUR:Ireland bagged the bronze medal in the European Senior Women's Championship at Lugano, Switzerland, at the weekend when they beat Spain 3-2.

Helen Jones, the Irish Seniors champion from Strabane, showed the way with an excellent 3 and 2 singles victory over Rocio Ruiz de Velasco.

The tie as a whole was a nip and tuck affair with the result hinging on the outcome of Carol Wickham’s match against Marta Estany.

Wickham was narrowly behind early on but pulled through to triumph on the home green, as did the foursomes pairing of Sheena McElroy and Pat Doran.

Their wins were crucial as further down the order Violet McBride and Suzanne Corcoran were both well beaten.

In Estoril, Ireland finished fifth in the Men’s Seniors Championship after convincingly beating Spain 4-1.

European individual champion Adrian Morrow, former amateur champion Garth McGimpsey and Maurice Kelly all won their singles while Michael Coote and John Mitchell took the foursomes honours.

LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR: Sweden's Caroline Hedwall completed a successful defence of her UNIQA Austrian Open title as she finished four strokes clear in her first tournament since a two-month injury lay-off.

A closing round of two-under-par 70 was sufficient to earn Hedwall her convincing win, with second place shared by her compatriot Mikaela Parmlid and veteran English player Laura Davies, who both had rounds of 68.

Hedwall, 23, had been sidelined by a hip problem but it proved to be no impediment at the course in Wiener Neustadt.

She had a bogey at the long opening hole in her final round but five birdies offset two further dropped shots and Hedwall was never seriously challenged over the closing holes.

Ireland’s Rebecca Codd finished in a tie for 23rd on two under after closing with a 72.

SENIORS: Australia's Terry Price completed the most dominant victory of the 2012 European Senior Tour season with a final round of five-under-par 67 to record a stunning six-shot win over Marc Farry and Barry Lane at Winston Golf in Vorbeck, Germany.

Des Smyth finished in a tie for 10th position on six under after closing with a one-under-par round of 71.
