Internationals Noel Fox (Portmarnock), Justin Kehoe (Birr) and Colm Moriarty (Athlone) will get another chance to further their claims for places on the Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team to face the United States at Ganton Golf Club in September when they tee-up in the St Andrews Links Trophy and the Brabazon Trophy respectively next month.
All three, with Andrew McCormick from Scrabo, were members of the Irish team that finished third behind England and Spain in the Sherry Cup in Sotogrange over the weekend.
Fox finished best of the four-man Irish team in the individual event won for the third time in four years by England's Gary Wolstenholme.
Wolstenholme, a veteran of four Walker Cup appearances, shot a final round of 67 to overhaul Spain's Pablo Martin to win by one shot.
Wolstenholme had rounds of 70, 72, 69 and 67 for a total of 278 - one ahead of Martin with the England pair Zane Scotland and Richard Walker taking third and fourth places.
The Former British boys' champion Martin looked set to keep the title in Spain, but the overnight leader collapsed to a final round of 78 for a 72-hole total of 279.
Fox was the more consistent of the Irish quartet with a level-par 288 total after rounds of 72, 74, 70 and 72, but for the other three it was a case of what might have been.
Kehoe was well in the hunt at the halfway mark after a second round of six-under-par 66 left him at four under for the tournament. He added a level-par third round, but slipped back down the field with a seven-over final round of 79.
The same was the case for Moriarty and McCormick. Moriarty finished with two 75s, while McCormick, after opening with a four-under 68, faded to rounds of 76 and 78.
England's total of 835 gave them an 11-shot win over Spain in the team event with Ireland in third place on 860. Wales, the defending champions finished fourth on 873.
Germany's Bettina Hauer won the women's title and compatriot Denise Simon finished third. Hauer had rounds of 69, 71, 72 and 75 for a 72-hole total of 287.
The six players selected to compete in the Brabazon Trophy (English Open) at Hunstanton Golf Club on May 16th to 18th are: John Foster (Ballyclare), Justin Kehoe (Birr), Andrew McCormick (Clandeboye), Michael McDermott (Stackstown), Colm Moriarty (Athlone), Michael McGeady (City of Derry) while the team for the St Andrews Links Trophy at St Andrews on May 23rd to 25th is: Noel Fox (Portmarnock), Justin Kehoe (Birr), Andrew McCormick (Clandeboye), Michael McDermott (Stackstown), Colm Moriarty (Athlone), Michael McGeady (City of Derry).
The Walker Cup is very much on the minds of Kehoe and Moriarty, who have decided to miss the West of Ireland Championship at Rosses Point over the Easter weekend in favour of the Duncan Putter in Southerndown in Wales.
Fox, the current East of Ireland championship holder, will be anxious to get his Walker Cup year off to the best possible start by adding the West title to his long list of achievements.
Karen Delaney, the ILGU Junior Order of Merit winner last year, will lead a strong Leinster team in the defence of their Interprovincial girls' title at Warrenpoint from April 23rd to 25th.
Delaney is joined by her sister Tara, Dawn Marie Conaty (Ashbourne) and Ann Marie Dalton (Coollattin) and new caps Rachel Cassidy from The Island and Yvonne Guinan (Birr) in a team captained by Noreen O'Driscoll.
Meanwhile, Joe Carr and Michael Fitzpatrick will be guests of honour at the Jubilee celebrations of the Hilary Golfing Society at Sutton Golf Club on Friday.
Carr, Fitzpatrick and the late Dr Gerry Owens were the founder members of the society in 1953 to help give competitive golf to low handicap and professional players.
