IRELAND'S WOMEN'S team finished up their Federation Cup qualifying group on a high note, beating Cameroon 3-0 in Antalya, Turkey yesterday.
But the result was academic following their defeat in the key match against Yugoslavia on Thursday. Still, four wins from five matches in a concentrated week's play cannot be all bad.
Irish team manager Pete Lowther is of the belief that it will be extremely difficult for Ireland to emerge from this group to the Euro African Group when there is a team like Yugoslavia in opposition.
"The mix of matches is so imbalanced. We coasted against Tunisia, Algeria, Iceland and yesterday, against Cameroon, but Yugoslavia were so much better than these countries," said Lowther.
For the record, Zara Wolseley and Gina Niland won their singles yesterday against Christine Njuma (3-6, 6-1, 6-3) and Nathalie Sienaub (6-2, 6-0), respectively. The same players shared the court for the doubles which Ireland won 7-6, 6-0.
