CYCLING:Dan Martin made a strong bid for a stage victory, driving the pace on the second of the day's four climbs, the Col du Tourmalet, and shattering the big breakaway group.
Martin dragged a smaller group clear and while this was eventually reeled in he pushed ahead again inside the final eight kilometres of the climb. Martin eventually finished seventh on the stage, six minutes and eight seconds back, while Nicolas Roche was one of the strongest of the general classification contenders. He led in a chase group 58 seconds behind race leader Wiggins. Roche moved up to 11th overall – just four seconds off 10th-placed Thibaut Pinot.
