ZARA WOLSELEY has been called up for her first full international in the European Nations women's team tennis championship in her native city of Belfast at the weekend.
Wolseley (21) was named yesterday as the replacement for the injured Claire Currans in an Irish team that faces a stiff examination against Sweden, Iceland and Luxembourg.
Wolseley was one of the most promising juniors to emerge decade and she welcomes her selection as her first real opportunity to prove herself in senior international company.
A Business Studies student at Trinity College, Dublin, her most notable achievement in open class tennis so far has been qualifying for a semi final place in the Home Countries Universities championships.
Meanwhile, Scott Barron, the top ranked Irish men's player, has scored a morale boosting outright win on the $10,000 Thailand satellite circuit. The win represents a milestone in the career of the young, ambitious Dubliner.
Barron beat principals on the circuit before proving too accomplished for a Romanian, Calugaru, 6-4 6-2, in the final.
The spin off for Irish tennis is the confidence this latest success should give Barron prior to the European Nations men's team championship at Fitzwilliam on December 6th.
