BASKETBALL:WHILE UL EAGLES were reasserting their dominance of the Nivea for Men's Superleague with an impressive 25-point win over rivals Killester, other challengers to the throne such as DCU Saints, UCD Marian and UCC Demons announced their intentions with wins at the weekend.

In the Nivea Women’s Superleague surprises were hard to find on the first weekend of action as defending champions UL Huskies triumphed with wins also for DCU Mercy, Team Montenotte Hotel and WIT Wildcats.

During his drive home to Dublin following a resounding win for his UL Eagles, Mark Keenan was able to able to look back at a job well done against his former club Killester.

“We won all the battles really. It was a dominant performance. We got off to a great start and that set the mindset for the rest of the game. We blew the game open early and never really looked back.”

The win places Eagles top of the table after two weeks, a welcome change from the shaky start to the season they suffered 12 months ago.

The contrast in fortunes is good news for Keenan, particularly with the Superleague title being decided this year without a play-off.

Eagles are joined at the top by the only other undefeated team through two games, UCC Demons who overcame an under-strength Dublin Inter side on a scoreline of 102 to 70 in Cork on Sunday.

Elsewhere there were good home wins for UCD Marian and DCU Saints over Bord Gáis Neptune and Moycullen respectively.

In the women’s Superleague DCU Mercy were able to keep their focus to beat Ulster Rockets away from home despite a pre-game mix up that sent the referees to the wrong location.

Meanwhile, WIT Wildcats proved far too strong for Liffey Celtics, winning 69 to 38 while UL Huskies emulated their male counterparts by defeating Killester by a comfortable margin also.

Things were a little bit more nerve wracking for Team Montenotte Hotel Cork however, who saw a big lead at home against Meteors of Dublin almost vanish before they steadied the ship to win by nine points.

“We had a comfortable lead and I think we got complacent which allowed them to fight,” said Montenotte head coach Andrea Congreaves. “Our team will learn from this I think.”
