THE selection of four young boxers to compete at the prestigious multi nations event in Belgrade this month, as a follow up to the recent gold medal exploits in Novi Said, Yugoslavia, reflects the IABA's policy to build early for the Sydney Olympics.
The four selected at the association's standing committee meeting at the National Stadium on Saturday a lightweight, Michael Dillon (Golden Cobra); welterweight, Patrick Walsh (St Colmans Cork); light welterweight, David Conlon (Loughlynn) and light middleweight, Darren Conlon (Loughlynn). The event is regarded as a stepping stone to the World junior championships in Havana next month.
Alo Kelly, who won gold in Novi Said moves up on to the Ireland senior team to take on Wales in Swansea on October 15th.
Francis Barrett is also included, but the popular Olympian has moved up a weight to welterweight for the match. He is finding it difficult to retain his Atlanta light welterweight limit and is sure to continue his career at the heavier division. Sean Collier who played a part in preparing the Wexford team for their All Ireland hurling success last month, is named at middleweight.
