GOLF TOUR NEWS:JB HOLMES was the early leader in the first round of the 2010 Pebble Beach National Pro-Am which started yesterday on the Monterey Peninsula in California.

Holmes holed his 178-yard approach shot for an eagle two on his 17th, the par-four eight, before finishing his round on seven under 65.

Charlie Hoffman was a shot behind in the clubhouse, with Chris Crouch and Garrett Willis on four under.

Pádraig Harrington was one under through 14 holes on the Spyglass Hill, traditionally the more difficult of the three rotation courses, the MPCC Shore Course and the Pebble Beach links course.

Harrington played with JP McManus in a group including Retief Goosen and Dermot Desmond. Phil Mickelson is still trying to recapture the form that marked the end of his 2009 campaign, and he was three shots off the lead, playing his first nine holes at the Shore Course in two under.
