Martina Hingis and Swiss teammate Roger Federer underlined their red-hot Hopman Cup favourites status by brushing aside Australia 3-0 in Perth yesterday. The Swiss pair swept to singles victories, clinching the tie even before the mixed doubles got under way at Burswood Dome.
Hingis scorched home in ruthless style over Nicole Pratt, winning 6-1, 6-1 in 47 minutes.
Then 19-year-old Federer (ranked 29th in the world) accounted for Richard Fromberg (ranked 71st) 6-3, 6-2, in an hour.
The Swiss completed a clean sweep when they thrashed the Australians 6-1, 6-3 in the mixed doubles in 58 minutes.
Meanwhile in the Australian men's hardcourt championship in Adelaide, Chile's Nicolas Massu, ranked 87th in the world, ousted French third seed Arnaud Clement in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 to qualify for the quarter-finals.
"I think that was one of the best matches in my life, I played unbelievable tennis today," 21year-old Massu said.
"If I can beat someone who's ranked 18th in the world, I think I can beat anyone."
Earlier, Australian veteran Jason Stoltenberg crushed American Paul Goldstein 6-2, 6-2.
Stoltenberg joined Ivan Ljubicic in the third round after the Croatian upset sixth seed Andrei Pavel of Romania 3-6, 75, 6-4. Spain's Alberto Martin also progressed, accounting for Belgium's Christophe Rochus 36, 7-6 (7/5), 7-5.
Switzerland's Patty Schnyder was taken to the brink by Russian schoolgirl Lina Krasnorutskaya before advancing to the quarter-finals of the Australian women's hardcourt championship at the Royal Pines resort on the Gold Coast.
The second seed was forced into a second set tiebreak after dropping the opening set before overpowering the 123rd ranked US Open junior champion, 3-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 in 103 minutes.
In other matches, Belgian teenager and eighth seed Justine Henin marched into the quarter-finals with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Canadian Sonya Jeyaseelan.
Italian Silvia Farina Elia beat Spanish fifth seed Magui Serna 6-4 6-2 and Croatian third seed Silvija Talaja ousted Spaniard Angeles Montolio 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
