Heelan responds to setback

Wesley College ... 22 Newbridge College ... 7Wesley College full back David Heelan stamped his authority on this tie with two tremendous tries at Donnybrook.

The winners had to deal with an early try from Newbridge fullback Gary Delahunt, who sprinted through a paralysed defence after just 44 seconds. Outhalf Fionn Carr added the conversion for a 7-0 lead.

Although they had their fair share of openings, Newbridge failed to add to their score.

They missed touch from a pen alty on their own line in the 22nd minute and were made to pay. Wesley took the ball straight back to them before spinning it right for Heelan to charge all the way to the line. Outhalf Alan Large converted from near the touchline.

In first-half injury time, Carr hit the left upright with a 40-metre penalty to leave the sides level at the break.

It didn't stay that way for long. Large went short over the Newbridge defenders with a delicate chip that bounced around until he collected it himself. The outhalf dived over the line and then made it 14-7 from the conversion.

The Kildare boys were still in the hunt and punched forward with determination. But they were caught with a sucker blow when Heelan took an inside pass from centre Gary Notley and deceived the last defender with a sharp change of direction.

Large missed the conversion, but not an injury-time penalty.
