Tony Hartin had reason to celebrate in Portugal last week when he was the only Irish player to win a class in the International Golf Week. Organised by Blackrock Travel and the Portuguese Tourist Board this very popular tournament has been running for seven years. The qualifying rounds are played over four courses - Estoril, Penha Longa, Quinta da Beloura and Quinta da Marinha - with the finals at the beautiful Belas Club. This year's tournament attracted an entry of 320 players from 16 different European Countries and the USA.
Thirty Irish players took part this year with four - Terry Lynch (The Island), Tony Hartin (Stackstown), Jim Mountjoy (Woodenbridge) and Tom McCarthy (Charlesland) - making it through to the last day. However, Hartin, a 13 handicap from the Stackstown Club, was the best of the Irish contingent when taking first place in class two with 33 points. Hartin, who won the Stackstown Intermediate Scratch Cup earlier in the year, had rounds of 39 points, 37, 29 and 27, with the best three counting for a place in the final. Willie Leggett from The Island, who twice won this event in recent years, missed out on the hat-trick as the overall title went to Finland's 16 handicap, Kyosti Viranen, while the gross was won by Spain's Manuel Muelas.
