Age is no barrier to Royal Dublin member Paddy Callinan. While the master of Royal Dublin, Christy O'Connor senior, was beating his age in the AIB Seniors championship at Mount Juliet, Callinan was winning on the double at Dollymount. He celebrated his 85th birthday recently, but he won class four in the May Medal at Royal Dublin on Saturday with a three under par 69, a score that also qualified him to represent the club in the Peugeot Golf Challenge in Mullingar and from there perhaps to the All-Ireland finals at The K Club later in the year.
Callinan is no stranger to the winner's enclosure. After a lifetime playing the game, he won the Centenary Matchplay championship in 1984 with partner Michael Howlett and he has continued to show the youngsters at Royal Dublin the way home when also winning the April Medal. The good news for Callinan is that his handicap has been cut from 25 to 22.
