HAMILTON HIGH School, Bandon, won their first Dr Harty Cup (Munster colleges’ senior hurling championship) game by defeating football specialists Coláiste Críost Rí by 1-18 to 3-10 in an exciting tie in Ballygarvan yesterday.

The west Cork school, whose only ever appearance in the competition came in a defeat by Midleton CBS in 1993, grabbed a couple of late points through the impressive Trevor Horgan and Jerry O’Neill to snatch victory.

Horgan claimed Hamilton’s goal just before half-time to finish with 1-6. Michael Cahalane contributed 0-4, one more than O’Neill, with Críost Rí replying with goals from a James Hurley own goal, Callum Crowe and Brian Ramsey.

Hamilton led by 1-8 to 1-6 at half-time after playing with the wind, but Críost Rí fought back on the resumption to lead by a point before their opponents hit five points without reply.

A third Críost Rí goal four minutes from the end set up a tense finish, but Hamilton finished strongly to take the spoils. Midleton CBS, Nenagh CBS and Thurles CBS complete the group.

There were mixed results for the other Cork schools involved in the first round of group games, which didn’t have any of the big hitters from Tipperary because of the county’s All-Ireland final minor replay against Dublin on Sunday week. St Colman’s, Fermoy, easily accounted for the Kerry Colleges by 2-25 to 2-9, but Gaelcoláiste Mhuire, the Gaelcoláiste of North Monastery CBS in Cork city, were on the receiving end of a drubbing from St Flannan’s College, Ennis, who also scored 2-25 to their opponents’ 1-5.

First-half goals from Colm Fenton and Ronan O’Regan had Colman’s in a good position with Alan Fenton and Shane Moroney both scoring 0-4 in a one-sided game. Tadhg Lynch and Brian Guilfoyle got the goals for St Flannan’s with Bobby Duggan scoring 0-8 and Stephen Ward 0-5. Clare minors David Conroy, Martin O’Leary and Aidan McGuane also impressed. Seán Warren scored the Cork school’s goal.

Debutants West Limerick Colleges made a winning start, defeating Abbey CBS by 1-17 to 1-12, with Damien Lacey scoring 1-10. Donal O’Dwyer scored all but two points of Abbey’s total.
