WITH all its added interests (which include £50,000 guaranteed Pool, live music and the screening of the Steve Collins v Nigel Benn fight) this evening's racing at Leopardstown is moderate fare.
Certainly the prospect of welcoming the winning trainer and jockey of the Coral Eclipse Stakes would prove a big boost to the race course executive and it is hoped that Definite Article can give Dermot Weld another Group One victory at Sandown earlier in the afternoon, although he will have his work cut out to beat the Geoff Wragg trained Pent ire.
The feature race at the Foxrock venue, the Denny Gold Medal Handicap, has managed to attract only seven runners and looks a tricky affair.
Hamad, who was deprived of a hat trick at the Curragh last week when beaten into third spot by Qualtron and Inchacooley (who runs in the 8.0), is fancied to get back on the winning trail for the Weld Kinane partnership.
Before that effort at headquarters, the son of Sadler's Wells was a comfortable two and a half length winner from Sofyaan over this evening's track and may pack too many guns for Try For Ever, who ran a cracking race at the Curragh last Saturday when beaten a neck and half a length by Peace Prize and Raiyoun.
The Sheikh Mohammed owned L'Opera was doing his best work in the closing stages when beaten half a length and three quarters of a length by Layik and Taklif at the Curragh eight days ago. Apprentice ridden on that occasion, he may appreciate the stronger handling of champion jockey Johnny Murtagh in the Brighton Race.
Jim Bolger has made a tremendous start to the season and Mantovani and Azra can add to his tally in their respective races.
Mantovani made his race course debut on this track last month and impressed when only going down by a short head to Quws. His experience may prove vital in the Glenalua EBF Maiden.
Azra goes for a hat trick in the Strathmore EBF Fund Race, having beaten Classic Park by two and a half lengths over this course last time.
Meanwhile, at Dundalk tomorrow Na Huihheachu may bring to an end a frustrating run of second places by landing the Blackrock Handicap. Dessie Hughes's gelding ran Multipit to a length at Tramore last time after a similar run behind Green Patriot over nine furlongs at this track last month.
Ardlea House, runner up at Bellewstown last Thursday, may go one better in the Dunleer Handicap, while the John Oxx trained Ansias, third behind stable companion Khariaz at the Curragh, is not opposed in the County Maiden.
