JEREMY GUSCOTT has criticised Ronan O’Gara for wrecking the Lions’ hopes against the Springboks last weekend.
England centre Guscott was a Lions hero on the last tour against the Springboks in 1997 when his drop goal clinched a famous series win.
But he let rip after suggesting Ireland and Munster outhalf O’Gara would “hang his head shame” after missing a vital tackle and then conceding the match-winning penalty.
Guscott said: “O’Gara missed a tackle on Jacque Fourie and then gave away the penalty at the end. He is going to be hanging his head in shame in the dressingroom.
“Those guys gave absolutely everything and must have been on top of the world at half-time. But the Boks came back in the second half and it was one of the best games of international rugby I have seen for a very long time.”
Jonah Lomu could be about to revive his career after French amateur club Marseille-Vitrolles said they were close to finalising a deal for the former All Black.
“Lomu at Marseille, it’s the promise of a great story, of a human adventure only rugby can provide and of an exciting challenge for an exceptional player whose only goal is to help our club grow,” Marseille-Vitrolles president Claude Atcher said in a statement.
A powerful winger, Lomu (34), won 63 caps for New Zealand between 1994 and 2002 and was regarded as the world’s most spectacular player in his prime.
“Everybody thought I had stopped my career but it was an error,” Lomu was quoted as saying in the statement posted on the club’s website (www.marseillevitrollesrugby.com).
Marseille-Vitrolles play in Federale 1, the equivalent of the French third division.
