LEICESTER REPORT:ALAN MUNRO completed a rewarding couple of days by winning the feature Gordon Richards Conditions Stakes at Leicester yesterday. Around 24 hours earlier, Munro had claimed his first Group One victory in more than three years aboard Mick Channon's Eva's Request in the Premio Lydia Tesio Shadwell in Rome.
The jockey, who won the 1991 Derby on Generous, has dipped in and out of the limelight ever since due to an enforced spell in the wilderness through health problems, although he also disappeared for a few years to study martial arts in the Far East.
He relies mainly on Peter Chapple-Hyam for rides these days but picked up a useful spare yesterday for Godolphin on Once More Dubai. The mile and a half event became a four-runner private battle for the Maktoum family due to non-runners and Munro cajoled the 17 to 2 shot a short-head in front of better-fancied stablemate Copperbeech. Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum’s Ezdiyaad and evens favourite Tactic followed them home.
“Yesterday was brilliant. Eva’s Request is a superstar, and now a Group One winner,” said Munro.
The last time Once More Dubai had scored was also at the Capanelle in Rome, in a Listed race a year ago when he was trained in Italy.
Munro added: “I think I should have won easier. I probably got there a bit too soon but I didn’t know the horse. I think he’s better than that as he pulled up before the line.”
