Golf: Final round play was possible at only one of the three second stage European Tour qualifying school venues in Northern Spain yesterday, at Pals, where Paddy Gribben finished in second place on 14 under par 278, just one shot adrift of Scotland's David Drysdale. Gribben now goes forward into next week's final in Sotogrande to compete for his 2002 European Tour card.
Pals is a tree-lined course and play there was completed as scheduled, but the Tramontana wind that swept down from the Pyrenees overnight made play impossible on the more exposed courses of Peralada and Emporda. "We attempted to play but balls were moving on the greens," said tournament director Mike Stewart. Damian McGrane with a 70 for 289 and Damian Mooney a 76 for 291, both missed the qualifying score of 287 at Pals.
Boxing: The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC) is to sell its central London headquarters to settle its debt with injured boxer Michael Watson, a newspaper reported yesterday.
"I cannot envisage us remaining at Jack Peterson House (its headquarters)," BBBC general secretary Simon Block was quoted assaying in the Daily Telegraph.
The High Court recently approved a settlement of £400,000 pounds in Watson's favour.
