RUGBY LEINSTER SCHOOLS' JUNIOR CUP FIRST ROUND: Clongowes Wood College 15 CBC Monkstown 7TRIES IN either half from James Lappin and William Grealy proved to be the difference in Donnybrook yesterday as Clongowes College came through a tough battle with CBC Monkstown.
CBC had the chance to take an early lead when they were awarded a 30-metre free three minutes in, but outhalf Ben Mahon’s effort at goal fell short.
The miss acted as a wake-up call for Clongowes and they managed to get through for the first try of the game after nine minutes, when centre Lappin drove over at the end of a long maul, with Jonathan Glynn adding the conversion.
Adam Proctor and Joey Hallwax had try-scoring opportunities for CBC, but Clongowes held their 7-0 lead at the break.
They made up for those misses six minutes after the restart, as fullback Seán O’Donnell touched down, with Mahon levelling the game with the conversion.
The decisive score came 10 minutes from time when CBC were powerless to stop inspirational number eight Grealy from getting over the line. Glynn was off target with the conversion, but sealed the win five minutes before time with a close-range penalty.
