The Collingwood Cup got underway in Limerick yesterday and the holders St Mary's made a promising start with a 2-0 win over a fancied UCC.
It took them just five minutes to assert their superiority with Neil Watson, who scored three in last year's final, claiming their goal.
Prompted by Sean O'Hare, St Mary's generally dominated and improved their position after 30 minutes with a well executed goal from Stephen Donaghey. With the two-goal advantage they held firm in the second half.
UUJ - 3, UCD - 1
Jordanstown, tight at the back and nifty up front, took an early lead through David Patton whose intended cross took goalkeeper Mark Richardson by surprise. It remained that way to the interval.
There was more urgency about UCD in the second half and their hopes were raised when David Connolly found the net. It looked like ending all square until Damien Mooney chipped in with two late goals for the Northerners.
DCU - 4, St Patrick's - 1
Though St Patrick's started brightly with Damien Ward shaving a post in the opening minutes, DCU got their act together and Andrew Dunne put them into a 1-0 interval lead.
St Patrick's rallied in the second half and Damien Ward equalised but the winners stepped up the tempo and Neil Heffernan carved the second goal for Danny McGinley, with Barry Quirke adding to St Patrick's problems with two late strikes.
Queen's - 1, DIT - 0
The first half was entertaining but without goals and it was Queen's who stole the points with a goal direct from a corner from Gareth Fulton.
Magee - 4, RCSI - 1
There were no problems for Magee whose Eamonn Morron struck a great first goal added to by Marty Morrison a minute later to leave it 2-0 at the break.
Former Derry City player Ryan Coyle tacked on number three and then added a fourth before Surgeons hit a consolation goal from John Chuite in 72 minutes.
UL - 0, Maynooth - 0
Last season's beaten finalists UL failed to break down a solid Maynooth defence. Edward McGowan came near for Maynooth who had the Man of the Match in centre back Colin McElroy.
UUC - 3, DU - 0
There were lots of chances in the first half but no goals. After 59 minutes Gavin Doherty opened UUC's account and then beat the offside trap for John Donoghty to put them 2-0 up. The same player made it 30.
