AIB CUP:GALWEGIANS BOOKED their place in the quarter-finals of the AIB Senior Cup following a 29-16 win over UCD at an overcast Belfield Bowl yesterday.
Galwegians prop Ja Naughton powered over for the first try and then set up wing John Cleary for the second as the visitors went in at the break 15-6 up.
Dean Clarke’s penalty put further light between the two on the quarter-hour, and although a Niall Earls penalty, his third of the afternoon, and a converted Michael Twomey try offered the students hope, UCD then surrendered possession to allow Cleary in for his second try with 14 minutes to go.
Defending champions Shannon received something of a going-over at Temple Hill as Cork Constitution took full advantage of a first-half breeze to register 28 points without reply.
Richie Lane and Tim Keneally both registered a brace of ties, and and although Shannon were bolstered by a converted Richie Mullane try shortly after the turnaround, a yellow card to outhalf Tadhg Bennett put paid to a comeback. Cork Constitution won 33-14.
Bernard Jackman’s Clontarf suffered an agonising, three-point defeat to Old Belvedere at Anglesea Road, with Conal Keane’s 75-minute penalty sealing a 17-14 win for the home side.
Old Belvedere had raced into a 14-6 lead at the break, with a Dave Mongan try the standout score. Clontarf rallied and eventually levelled proceedings when Karl De Chena touched down, before Keane struck late for the home side.
Gerry Hurley hit 14 points as Garryowen defeated Division One A leaders St Mary’s College 19-3, while Dolphin put 20 points past Belfast Harlequins in the second half to run out 28-7 winners at Deramore Park.
The remaining fixture from Saturday saw Andy Linton run in two tries for Queen’s University as they defeated UCC 24-3.
