MENS HOCKEY/Weekend Preview: While Pembroke and Glenanne will be looking towards Monday's Leinster Senior Cup final at Grange Road as one of the more enjoyable days of the domestic season, the league match on Saturday between the same two teams will be more import for both clubs, writes Johnny Watterson.
Pembroke, whose women's side is also in the St Patrick's day final, against Loreto, still have an outside chance of finishing inside the top three in the Leinster Senior League and ensuring that they once again take part in the Irish Club Championships, while Glenanne continue to have hopes, no matter how slim, of taking the league title.
As it stands Three Rock Rovers head the table by three points and have three matches remaining (Avoca at home, UCD away, Railway Union away). Glenanne, in second place have four matches remaining (Monkstown away, Pembroke at home, Aer Lingus at home, Avoca at home) and so the prospect of both sides ending on the same points is still a possibility.
For Pembroke to keep either Corinthians or Monkstown out of the top three positions requires the two higher teams to spectacularly foul up and with Irish Senior Cup and Leinster Senior Cup semi-finalists Corinthians on 28 points, Monkstown on 26 and Pembroke on 23, the whip hand is clearly not with the Serpentine Avenue club.
Glenanne's hopes are that they take the league and cup, and they will look to their previous league tie with Pembroke, when they won 4-0 at St Mark's, as evidence they are the stronger side. Pembroke have doubts over the fitness of Ireland striker Gordon Elliott and Simon Kershaw while Paddy Conlan is with the Scotland side in Egypt.
Rovers' home league game against Avoca ought not to spring any surprises. While Avoca have had a difficult outdoor season this year, they to beat Railway Union in the indoor league play-off and also defeated them in the cup final.
