Glenanne at full throttle

Coming so close to Christmas, there may be a touch of levity about tomorrow's second-round ties in the Leinster Senior Cup

Coming so close to Christmas, there may be a touch of levity about tomorrow's second-round ties in the Leinster Senior Cup. The Corinthians-Glenanne joust at Whitechurch, though, is bound to be a cracker in view of the recent league game at the same venue in which Corinthians poached a 2-2 draw.

Glenanne, in the Neville Cup final for the sixth successive time on St Stephen's Day (against Monkstown), will probably have a full-strength squad on call tomorrow and will be more wary this time of being caught on the break.

The only defeat sustained by Glenanne this season was right at the beginning when they went under to Pembroke Wanderers in the Top Four final and the Tallaght brigade would relish a challenge to the Mills Trophy holders in the New Year. Pembroke meanwhile are sure to surge through to the next round at the expense of St Brendan's at Serpentine Avenue.

The odds will also be heavily in favour of the other first division sides who are meeting lesser opposition. Avoca should advance against Portrane while Three Rock Rovers, Monkstown and UCD, though faced with away assignments, will be expected to overpower Clontarf, St James's Gate and Suttonians, respectively. It will be a close call as to whether they are joined by Trinity or Aer Lingus while at least Weston or Eastern Health will represent the second division in the quarter-finals.
