IRISH winger, Simon Geoghegan, is still suffering from the toe injury that has bothered him for the past couple of years and it is doubtful whether he will be able to play from the outset of the coming rugby season.

This emerged yesterday from the first day of the Irish squad's training programme at the University of Limerick. Irish manager, Pat Whelan, confirmed that the injury is still there in spite of a minor operation which took place last May to try to clear it up.

The entire squad of 34 was fitness tested in the University of Limerick yesterday morning and Whelan expressed himself ,pleased with the results: "We are working on upper body strength and in that respect there has been big improvement," he said.

Whelan said that the work would become more intensive as the weekend progressed. Assisting Murray Kidd, the Irish team coach, throughout the weekend, will be the former New Zealand captain and wing forward, Mike Brewer.
