Spanish prodigy Sergio Garcia was forced to withdraw from the St Jude Classic in Memphis when an abscess developed above his left eye.

The 19-year-old was forced to undergo minor surgery but is expected to recover in time to play in next month's Irish Open.

Tom Lehman, Hal Sutton and South Africa's David Frost shot eight-under-par 63s in sweltering conditions to share the first-round lead at the final US Open warm-up event.

Soft greens and little wind allowed players to be extremely aggressive and scoring was so low that only 37 out of 156 players failed to at least match par as the field averaged 69.6 strokes.
