Ian Woosnam's trip down memory lane failed to help him recapture some former glories in the first round of the Sarazen World Open.
The Welshman, one of the pretournament favourites, reverted to a replica of the persimmon-headed driver he used to win the 1991 US Masters.
But it proved to be more of a hindrance than a help as he battled to a one-under-par 71 at PGA Golf de Catalunya in Girona to be six shots off the overnight lead held by Spain's Francisco Cea.
Cea fired a seven-under-par 65 for a one-stroke lead over English duo Robert Coles and Roger Winchester and Denmark's Thomas Bjorn.
Woosnam struggled off the tee and paid the price of playing the undulating course blind after Wednesday's pro-am was washed out by torrential rain.
"At the 15th it's over 500 yards and you think you have to kill a drive to reach it in two," said Woosnam. "I hit it a bit right, lost a ball and took six when in fact you don't have to hit a big drive at all. That's down to just not knowing the course."
