Galwegians let it slip again

Another home game and another opportunity lost

Another home game and another opportunity lost. Yet again Galwegians' poor scrum proved costly as an unimpressive Young Munster gratefully took the points at Crowley Park.

Galwegians had obviously done some serious soul-searching in the wake of their record 46-0 defeat to Garryowen and it showed in all but their set-pieces as they repeatedly had Young Munster on the back foot.

Young Munster began in competent fashion, choosing to spurn several kickable penalties in the opening quarter after Aidan O'Halloran missed a third minute effort. Yet outside one successful kick after 23 minutes Young Munster lost their rhythm and never looked like scoring again.

Instead, it was the home side that recovered from a stuttering start and when able to secure quick ball they were able to carve openings which should have yielded fruit. However, three opportunities were lost in the opening half - the best when full-back Alan Reddan failed to control an Eric Elwood pass after Pat Duignan and Henry O'Toole stole possession to put Munster's defence under severe pressure.

One try could have turned the game and early in the second half Elwood's neat chip forced the chase down the right for Duignan, who eventually lost out to Noel O'Meara, who was forced to cover from the left win.

The scoring chances became more limited as Galwegians' surfeit of scrums found them losing ground against Munster's front five. Elwood's penalty after 63 minutes levelled the scores, but four minutes later the home side infringed in the ruck and O'Halloran was able to score from in front of the posts.

It was curtains for the home side when they were offered yet another scrum after O'Halloran was caught in possession inside his own 22. It proved a lucky escape route for Young Munster, while it was Galwegians' third Division One loss by the margin of a single score.
