CYRIL FARRELL is the new Galway hurling manager for the coming season.
At last night's Galway hurling board meeting in Athenry, Farrell was elected unopposed to the post after the other four candidates withdrew their names.
Addressing the delegates, Farrell called for all sections of Galway hurling to join in supporting the quest for another senior All Ireland victory.
"I know that the hurling talent is there but there is obviously a big task ahead in blending and preparing the right team," said Farrell.
This is Farrell's third term of office as Galway team manager. He was manager from 1980 to 82 and from 1985 to 1991, during which Galway won All Irelands in 1980, 1987 and 1988.
Farrell, who is principal of St Raphael's Secondary College in Loughrea, was manager of this year's Galway under 21 hurling team which defeated Wexford in the All Ireland final.
