The Republic of Ireland under-18 side got their European Championship campaign off to a flying start when they won their opening game of the qualifying tournament 4-0 against hosts Hungary in Sopron yesterday.

Marie Gallagher put the Irish in front after just five minutes. They had to wait until the 45th minute for their second, which was netted by Caroline Thorpe, but Gallagher was on hand again on 63 minutes to score her second of the match.

There was no way back for Hungary when Michelle Walsh wrapped up the game with Ireland's fourth goal on 88 minutes.

The Republic of Ireland take on Iceland tomorrow afternoon and complete their programme against Estonia on Sunday.
