Begley eyes comeback
BRIAN BEGLEY has targeted a return to the Limerick senior hurling team in 2009 after his entire championship season was wiped out through injury.
The towering Mungret forward played just once all year for the county, against Galway in the National League, and decided to withdraw from the squad before the championship began.
Begley, 29 this month, has been dogged by ankle and knee problems in recent seasons and this year had knee surgery for the third time.
"There's not much cartilage left in my knee with wear and tear and grinding and with my ankle," said Begley though he is optimistic that he still has "a couple of years left" as an intercounty hurler.
Collins against card 'replacements'
A LEADING official - and renowned former intercounty referee - has strongly criticised proposals that allow players sent to the line on yellow cards to be replaced. Paddy Collins, Westmeath's development officer, yesterday said he had "serious problems with the idea that a team could go unpunished when a player commits repeated fouls".
The proposal will come before a special congress of the GAA this weekend, but Collins said, "This is non-punishment. There should be a team punishment too. The stronger the panel, the less affected the team will be by . . . a yellow card."
Dublin hope to shed light on Tyrone
DUBLIN COUNTY board chairman Gerry Harrington will explore the possibility of a money-spinning floodlit National Football League clash with Tyrone next year if the Dubs have a home fixture against the All-Ireland champions.
The first floodlit game played at Croke Park attracted a sellout crowd for the meeting of the two counties in February 2007.
Harrington said: "We don't know when the National League fixtures for next year will be released by the CCCC, but when they are we will make an appropriate decision if we are granted a home match against Tyrone."
Meanwhile, Harrington has given a commitment to the Dublin county committee that a new senior football team manager will be in place in time for a full county board meeting on November 3rd.
