Longford Town ...1 Cork City ...0This time last week Longford were languishing second from bottom in the Premier Division. But an away point against Shelbourne followed by a victory over St Patrick's Athletic in Richmond Park on Friday night and now this latest success against Cork City means the Midlanders will be plying their trade in the top flight again next season.
For Cork City this was a very disappointing result - they needed a point to move ahead of Shamrock Rovers in the race for European qualification.
The large attendance did not have to wait long for the winning goal. Midfielder Brian Byrne sent in a delightful cross from the left after only two minutes and in-form striker Sean Francis made no mistake.
While Longford continued to create chances most of the danger centred around Stephen O'Brien's goal. The Longford goalkeeperkeeper was called into action on numerous occasions but managed to keep his side in the top flight
