Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler suffered a suspected broken nose yesterday after a fracas at a hotel.
Merseyside police declined to reveal details of the incident, but said two men had been arrested.
In a statement, the police said: "On the morning of 18 April an incident occurred at the Moat House Hotel, in Liverpool, involving Liverpool footballer Robbie Fowler.
"As a result of this incident, Mr Fowler and another male received injuries. In Mr Fowler's case this included a suspected broken nose.
"Two males were arrested in the vicinity and are currently being interviewed."
The footballer was not one of the two suspects arrested.
It has been a turbulent two months for Fowler. On Friday, the 24-year-old decided, after discussions with Liverpool officials, not to appeal against a six-match ban imposed by the Football Association.
He was suspended for four games, fined £32,000 by the FA and a similar sum by Liverpool when he appeared to mimic cocaine sniffing after scoring a penalty in the Merseyside derby with Everton a fortnight ago.
Fowler was also banned for two games recently after his well-publicised dispute with Chelsea's Graeme Le Saux.
A spokesman for Liverpool FC said yesterday they were aware of the incident: "The police are obviously conducting their inquiries and there is really nothing more we can say."
