Britain's Superbike world champion Carl Fogarty clinched both races in the first SBK World Championship event of 1999 at Kyalami, South Africa. But the defending champion's victory was overshadowed by the tragic death of South African champion Brett MacLeod after he crashed during the first race of the World Supersport Championship.
MacLeod was killed after he lost control of his 600cc Suzuki as he came out of a corner. He flew over the handlebars and was hit by another bike as he lay on the track. The final race of the day, the Nashua Invitation, was cancelled as a mark of respect.
Fogarty, 32, was left despondent after the tragedy marred any celebration. "Motorcycling is a very dangerous sport and there's no getting away from that," Fogarty said. "It's difficult to celebrate today after what has happened."
Fogarty won both heats of his race - the 13th time he had accomplished that double feat - to secure his 50th win in the world championship. The three-times world champion finished a comfortable five seconds ahead of Ducati team-mate Troy Corser in the first race and six seconds ahead of New Zealander Aaron Slight in the second.
