Why Chelsea are struggling
Departure of Ray Wilkins
Chelsea retain the capacity to self-destruct. After the narrow win over Fulham last month the club’s hierarchy rejected stability and dismissed the assistant first-team coach, Ray Wilkins.
Lack of investment in signings
The summer’s transfer policy had been about cost-cutting. Joe Cole, Michael Ballack and Juliano Belletti were released. Deco and Ricardo Carvalho were sold, along with numerous youngsters. The only arrivals were Yossi Benayoun, a bit-part player at Liverpool, and Ramires.
Injuries to key personnel
Key players have cluttered up the treatment room. Frank Lampard has not featured since August . John Terry returns today. Alex has not been himself while awaiting arthroscopic surgery.
The youngsters are not ready
The injuries and transfer policy have placed an unfair emphasis on the youngsters.
Indiscipline and lack of focus
Ancelotti yesterday bemoaned his side’s lack of desire recently. Chelsea have conceded early in their past four away fixtures.
