Castlecomer won the South Leinster Trophy at Carlow when they beat Athy in the final. Although they lost the opening match, they won the next four with Benny Cleere, Pat Fitzpatrick, Eamon Walsh and Seamus O'Connor putting the Co Kilkenny club into an unbeatable position.
Michael Doheny and Paul Dillon were then called in. But it was the match Castlecomer lost that provided the best excitement. Ned Kenny was first out and found himself four down at the turn. He went further behind at the 13th. But with defeat staring him in the face, Kenny showed tremendous determination to win the next five holes and take the match to the 19th, where Athy's Seamus McGeehan eventually won the match, his club's only victory on the day.
