THE Leinster Senior Cup Section A final at Donnybrook yesterday was, in the words of Schools committee chairman Caleb Powell "a superb advertisement for schoolboy rugby." All 31 players involved had obviously been encouraged to think positively. The rucks were vigorously contested; the ball was recycled quickly and cleanly; the passing was crisp and the running enterprising.

Perhaps Wilson's full-back - Barry Loughrey, revelled most in this constructive approach. Always, his first instinct when in possession, including once from behind his own line, was to attack with the ball in hand.

And in the end, this attacking spirit brought about the match-winning score. Seemingly caught in no man's land near halfway, Loughrey made his way cross-field before kicking ahead for left wing Antoine Drion. This drew a late tackle and a penalty was awarded.,

Loughrey chipped the kick just inside the left upright to edge Wilson's ahead as the full-time whistle approached.

Until Loughrey's late intervention, Kilkenny looked capable of victory. They ground down Wilson's up front with the props, brothers Karl and Brian Gill, forceful in the tight. Backing them up was a back division that stretched the Wilson's cover to the full. Steven D'Alton made his way over for the first score after a drive from Nigel Cooke and a slick pass from scrum-half Clive Kavanagh, David Smith landed the conversion.

Wilson's hit back with a penalty from Loughrey and an opportunist try in the right corner by centre Barry Leonard, who had the assistance of David Furlong following an astute kick-ahead.
