LEINSTER SCHOOLS SENIOR CUP Castleknock College 18 St Mary's College 3: CASTLEKNOCK COLLEGE powered their way into the quarter-finals of the Leinster Senior Schools Cup yesterday, proving too strong for a depleted St Mary's outfit at Donnybrook.
With captain Thomas Farrell leading the way with a series of big carries and impressive offloads, Castleknock crossed the line first midway through the first half. The St Mary’s defence were so intent on stopping the outside centre that they missed Michael Mellet stepping off his wing and he took Robert Troy’s pass to slip under the posts.
Troy added the conversion, but St Mary’s hit back with a Conor Corcoran penalty before the break to keep in touch.
Despite starting the second half with purpose, the Rathmines boys couldn’t breach a well-organised Castleknock defence and slipped further behind when Troy added a pair of penalties to give his side some breathing room.
And they could finally relax when scrumhalf Daragh Henry picked from the base of a ruck and raced home from 40 metres
