"FANTASTICUS" was Dermot Weld's reaction to the success of Zagreb in Sunday's Budweiser Irish Derby with the winner earning himself a post Derby rating of 125 from the senior Irish handicapper Ciaran Kennelly.
And with the stable collecting two juvenile maidens over the weekend, with Star Profile and Beautiful Fire, Fantasticus could keep the ball rolling in the Kilsharvan EBF 2-Y-O Maiden at the opening session of Bellewstown this evening. First time out at Gowran Park two weeks ago Fantasticus showed good early pace but was outstayed over seven furlongs by Gan Ainm.
Weld could also garner the other maidens for older horses with Suez Tornado and Libros. Particular interest will attach to Libros who carried the same colours as Zagreb and actually ran in the same race as him last time out. He was the whipper in at Leopardstown over one mile four furlongs behind Damancher and Zagreb, but now drops back to a mile.
Suez Tornado ran well at Dundalk when fourth to Dissiden Prince and stablemate Seiche Raoi, who was third, but has won since.
The revival in the fortunes of Bellewstown has been quite remarkable and on an average attendance basis, as against the prize money on offer, it has to be amongst the most successful in the country. It has history on its side though as they have been racing for over 250 years on this hill outside Drogheda.
