Thirty-five year old Texan Bob Estes held up under tremendous pressure to fire a final round even par 71 at the TPC course at Southwind to win the Fed Ex St Jude Classic by just one shot from Bernhard Langer, who made second place his own with a superb bogey-free 66.
Bogeys at 14 and 15 saw Estes, who had led throughout the tournament following a first-round 61, going into the final hole with just a one-shot lead.
But pitched his second shot at the par-four 18th to within three feet of the pin and, despite taking two putts from such a short distance, he closed with a level-par 71 to claim victory on 17 under par.
It was a second PGA Tour title for Estes, his first coming way back in 1994 at the Texas Open.
The German Ryder Cup star birdied the 16th hole to leapfrog ahead of Tom Lehman and Scott McCarron by just one shot. A nice touch at the end of the day was Lehman taking the trouble to return to the recorders hut after signing autographs to congratulate Langer and his caddie Peter Coleman.
Nick Faldo had a another fine tournament to follow the recent PGA Championship finishing in a tie for 10th place on 12 under par alongside his old Masters adversary Scott Hoch.
Completing a European top-10 treble, Jesper Parnevik finished one shot ahead of Faldo, to tie with Nick Price, good omens for next week's US Open.
Ireland's Richie Coughlan finished with a final round of 72 for a total of five under par 279.
