ENGLISH racing motorcyclist Daniel Humphries of Preston was killed during the Tandragee 100 race in Co Armagh on Saturday. The incident occurred on the third last lap of the feature race on a fast right hand bend just past the start-finish line.
It appears that the engine of Humphries' 250cc Honda seized up, causing the machine to hit a straw bale protecting a concrete post. Unfortunately, Humphries was thrown from his machine and in the ensuing impact he died instantly. He had started the race with the Group B riders, behind the faster competitors.
Bertie Fisher and Rory Kennedy in the Toughmac Subaru Impreza held off a strong challenge from the Kanturk crew of Liam O'Callaghan and James O'Brien to win the weekend's Carling Rally of the Lakes, round three of the Tarmac Rally Championship.
It was a sweet victory for the Ulsterman, who missed the event last year, especially after a fraught Circuit of Ireland in which he was only fourth. O'Callaghan, at the wheel of a Toyota Celica GT4, led Fisher after Saturday's stages and eventually finished just 27 seconds down.
James Cullen and Ellen Morgan were slowed by gearbox trouble but held on the third in the Escort RS Cosworth and, after a long battle, Eamonn Boland overtook Peadar Hurson to finish fourth, both driving Escort Cosworths.
