THERE were violent scenes in central London last night as scores of disappointed England supporters clashed with police after their defeat at Wembley.
Shortly after midnight a crowd of around 200 fans which had gathered in, Trafalgar Square began marching in the direction of Piccadilly, walking over car bonnets and roofs.
When they found their route to Piccadilly cut off by police, the fans began milling in the street near the National Gallery. Terrified motorists cowered in their vehicles as their doors were kicked and their windscreen's covered in spit.
The clashes began shortly after 11.30 pm when a large number of bottles were thrown at a line of riot police stretched across the south west side of the square.
As a small number of fans goaded officers as their line advanced to the base of Nelson's Column, a number of scuffles broke out and a number of people were taken away suffering from minor injuries.
There were isolated incidents of trouble elsewhere in London during the night as a mood of disappointment descended on the West End.
After crowding around the packed bars and cafes of Leicester Square, straining to see the drama unfold on TV sets inside most fans ended the evening heading sadly for home.
Police in Birmingham said there had been outbreaks of fighting across the West Midlands.
A spokesman said. "They are all minor scuffles around pubs. There have been a number of outbreaks in all types of areas."
The London Ambulance Service took more than 200 calls in the 30 minutes after midnight said a spokeswoman.
She added. "Every ambulance in London is out. They are just dropping people off at the hospitals then going back out again.
