Elsworth looks to The Geezer

Racing/Goodwood preview: David Elsworth should have cause for celebration if The Geezer runs to his true form at Glorious Goodwood today.

Elsworth was on cloud nine after Norse Dancer finished second to Azamour in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes on Saturday.

Although he was buoyed by that terrific display, the Whitsbury trainer has every right to expect The Geezer to go one better in the Group Three ABN Amro Gordon Stakes over 12 furlongs.

Elsworth wasted no time in getting the three-year-old colt back on track after his Vodafone Derby disappointment, and was an unlucky-in-running third in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot at York.

He then followed that encouraging run with a workmanlike victory in a Pattern race at Haydock last time out.

What is more, The Geezer will not be inconvenienced if conditions at the Sussex track continue to soften by any excessive rainfall.

The son of Halling won a small prize at Newbury on good to soft ground, before finishing second behind Motivator when the going was soft in the Dante Stakes.

If Elsworth's chestnut gets a clear run, he possesses the turn of foot to make light work of a small but select field, that includes John Dunlop's progressive charge Unfurled.

Geoff Wragg's Autumn Glory is difficult to oppose in the Group Three Betfair Cup Lennox Stakes.

Wragg's five-year-old is another who can produce the goods when there is a bit of cut in the ground as he illustrated when he sluiced to a two-length success in the mud at Newmarket last year.

Court Masterpiece, who finished a neck in arrears of Autumn Glory at Lingfield, and Michael Stoute's Arakan should also be there or thereabouts.

However, Wragg's entire is on top of his game of late and will take all the beating in this seven-furlong event.

Richard Whitaker has made no secret of the regard he holds Tabaret in, and his colt could hold all the aces in the Group Three Molecomb Stakes over the minimum trip.

The two-year-old, a ready winner at Beverley last time out, had won many new friends with an encouraging display in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot at York when he finished a staying-on third from Titus Alone.

Still largely unexposed at this level, the son of Bertolini has the ticks in all the right boxes to hold his own at this level.

The calibre of racing at Beverley is rather less rousing than at Goodwood, but Kevin Ryan has an interesting sort who should go close in the Dorothy Laird Ladies' Handicap.

Nina Carberry and Ryan often team up to good effect in this type of event and have a leading contender in Iskander.
