Dundalk won the FBD Barton Cup for only the second time, the previous occasion being 36 years ago, on Sunday when they beat Carlow in a dramatic play-off after the sides finished level at five matches each at Carlow.

The second leg, postponed twice due to inclement weather, finally got under way on Sunday morning and Carlow, trailing 3-2 from the first leg, were first to strike, with Harry Ewing and John Barry beating Patsy Cole and Leslie Toal at the 13th. Tommy Lennon and Brian Kirwan put the home side in front with a 5 and 4 win over Alan Cole and Neil McGuinness. However, the remaining three matches were all close, with Dermot Murphy and Bernard White gaining Dundalk's first point with a 3 and 1 win over John McHugh and Leo Grogan. The other two matches on the course went to the 17th where Peter Rogers and Pat Hoey made sure of a play-off when beating Ross Hennessy and Derek Kilbride while John Swan and Stephen Murphy gave Carlow a 3-2 win over Eddie Rogers and Peter Tuite.

So it was down to a play-off and as decided before the final leg Lennon and Kirwan from Carlow were nominated to play Murphy and White over three holes. The Dundalk pair won the first when Carlow failed to make the green in two and at the second both pairs missed the green at the par three. White, however, chipped to 10 feet with Carlow over the back in heavy rough. Lennon failed to reach the green with his recovery and after Kirwan chipped to eight feet, Dundalk were left with two putts for the match and victory.
