French international Christophe Dugarry faces a six-month ban after testing positive for the banned anabolic steroid nandrolone.
Dugarry insists he is innocent and has vowed to fight the case. Although he has had a mixed career as a striker for a number of clubs, he scored France's first goal of their World Cup-winning campaign and had a stadium named after him in Bordeaux.
The 27-year-old Marseille player is the latest French player - and biggest name - to have been caught taking the substance.
In recent years, four French players, including former internationals Cyril Pouget and Vincent Guerin, have been given six-month bans for taking nandrolone, which helps muscle development and reduces fatigue.
Marseille sporting director Marcel Dib has confirmed Dugarry's positive result. Dugarry tested positive for the banned substance after the match between Marseille and Lyon on April 30th.
